FAQ's
Who can I contact if I have any questions?
The YSM organising team is available to answer any questions you may have regarding the YSM:
- Salena Husband (BS)
- Janine Melzig (G)
- Giovanni Antonio Puliga (AT)
- Felix Rosenbaum (BS)
- Marie Christine Seidel (BS)
- Niklas Wüsthoff (AG)
- Anja Hühnlein (IB)
You can reach them at ysm@julius-kuehn.de.
How can I finance my participation?
The best right at the start: There are no fees for the YSM seminar and the YSM conference. However, we have to collect a small contribution for the catering during the breaks and for the city tour:
Catering during the Seminar (if you participate): 10,00 €,
Catering during the Conference: 15,00 €,
City Tour: 5,00 € (if you participate).
Please pay in cash or via PayPal at the registration desk at the first day of the Seminar and Conference, respectively.
For the blacklight minigolf there is an additional charge of 10.00 € (plus any costs for food and drinks), which each participant must pay on-site. Participants are also responsible for covering the costs of any restaurant visits on-site.
Hotel
Accommodation at the Jugendherberge Braunschweig (within the reserved contingent) is free of charge. However, if you choose to book a single room or a room at another hotel, you will have to pay for it yourself and claim the money back from your project fund.
Travel
If you travel by institute car, there are no travel costs. If you have to travel by train, you can request cost coverage by emailing gff@julius-kuehn.de.
Do I have to submit a business trip application?
For participation in the YSM, household staff are covered under the general business travel approval (the BLE is informed), and no individual approval via the travel portal is required. Employees funded by third-party sources, however, must submit their business travel requests through the BLE travel portal before the YSM. If your funder is asking for a justification, you can use the following wording:
“Participation in the YSM serves the purpose of scientific exchange and professional development. The project and initial project results will be presented to a broad audience in a talk/poster by Mr/Ms ... In addition, participation in the conference serves to network with relevant colleagues and potential cooperation partners.”
What do I have to do after my registration?
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to verify your account on the YSM website. Verification is important so that you can then log in and view your registration details.
After logging in to the YSM website, you will have the opportunity to submit your abstract for a talk or poster by 25 September 2026. However, a contribution is not a prerequisite for participation in the YSM. If you do not wish to present a talk or poster, you do not need to do anything else after registration.
After submitting your abstract, you will receive a confirmation email. You can change the abstract at any time after logging in to the YSM website until 25 September 2026 at the latest.
If more than 28 talks are submitted, the organising team will contact some participants at the beginning of October and ask them to present a poster instead.
To ensure that everything is on site when you arrive, we recommend uploading your poster pptx file by 16 October 2026 or your presentation slides by 13 November 2026 after logging in on the YSM website.
If you have chosen a room at the Jugendherberge Braunschweig during your registration, you do not have to do anything else for the overnight stay. The organisation team will take care of sending the list of names to the hotel and paying the bill.
At the start of the seminar or conference, we ask you to bring cash for the catering and, if applicable, for the city tour. A bank transfer via PayPal will also be possible at the registration desk.

How do I become a member of the organising team next year?
The YSM is traditionally organized by PhD students and young post-docs of the JKI. Thus, it is inherent that the organising team changes from year to year. There is always advice available from the previous organisers so that the new team can build upon their experiences and on a collection of supporting material. If you are interested in being a part of next year’s organising team, do not hesitate to contact any member of this year’s team.
