Outline and content of the seminar

Effective and Dynamic Presentations

This 1,5-day workshop offers an insight into basic principles and tools of dynamic presentations in science. It goes beyond a theoretical understanding of presentation performance and invites the participants to expand their range of action through hands on exercises and improvisational processes. In the first part, structure, slide design and storyline as well as basic storytelling elements are being addressed. Creating a concise and compelling storyline is the first step in this training. Focussing especially on the opening and ending, the participants will create a first draft of a talk opening. The storyline, determines the quality of the talk. Thus, we shed light on the structure as well as the end to “land the final message”. Furthermore, the participants learn the most important elements of storytelling and how to turn their scientific talk into a compelling story. The second part of this workshop is concerned with the delivery of an effective presentation. The participants will reflect, train and practice their delivery style in terms of body language, use of voice and connection to the content. The overall performance quality will be addressed and the participants will receive individual feedback. They will add effective skills to their presentation skill tool box that will make a lasting impression.

Method

The artsbased approach invites the participants to broaden their range of action through hands-on practice and interaction in order to overcome personal limitations. Artsbased exercises generate learning through experience and through improvisation. Both, individual feedback and short coaching moments enhanced by practical elements of theatre and vocal performance create a high value for the participants.
